Whatever forgotten river

Poem and ink drawing

I sit rotating life-sized images of ancient people’s feet,
recasting me and you as us and them and
estimating the thinking distances between
us anatomically modern humans.

I make disembodied contact with your fingers, pausing
in the chat to let dots appear, and rub at the dark
accumulation of months of days like this
in the gap below the spacebar.

The mineralised footprints are an accident of sediment and
walking by two individuals side by side, probably
towards a river, and suggest a careful descent
down a steep and unstable bank.

You are still typing in the bottom right when I go to
look up rivers where I’m advertised replicas of the
fossils on my minimised window and how
to practice being present.
